My Story:
How Burgeoning Communities was conceived. 2008 and the Great Recession brought incredible financial loss for me and my family. Forty years as a design/builder and construction manager seemed of little benefit in my new search for meaningful work. I soon realized how widespread and devastating this absence of work is, in my community, in our country, and throughout the world. And it became apparent what this dispiriting feeling means for millions of people. Everyone knows someone who has been affected, someone who wants and needs to contribute to society again. The “economic recovery” does not measure "the demoralization of the growing armies of the unemployed".
Feeling baffled with the lack of ingenuity of "employment agencies" to utilize my skills, I decided to start my own employment/temp agency. I then formed job-seeker networking groups with individuals who were also devastated, isolated, and dispirited. Through a process of sharing our skills and knowledge, and consulting on the needs of the community, we began to help one another rediscover our confidence and passion as we fashioned methods to find/create work and serve. This process of action, consulting, working together, communal reflection, learning and making mistakes is a key element in how this project functions at every level. (see below for a better understanding)
Living and working in the US, Africa, Israel, and other parts of the world, I have learned the importance of work and sacrifice, from many different people and cultures. Meaningful work and service affects the spirit of an individual, and therefore the family, and the community.
From June 2013 to March 2016 My wife and I were live-in co-managers of an Independent Living Community (120 rooms) for Retired Seniors (not to be confused with the Youngish Seniors). This is not only a service business, but an institution of love and compassion. It creates an environment where retired seniors, some of whom have experienced overwhelming losses of their own, have been able to recover, and in many cases have an “age reversal” experience. This environment has engendered, through socialization and good food, a feeling of home for these Elders, and it encourages families to gather in this loving space. The benefits of this business structure and the methods it employs to transform people are also essential elements of the project. This portion of the business model is the "Anchor Institution".
From March 2016 to May 2017, I worked at the Baha'i National Center near Chicago Illinois. I serve in a newly created Office of Support Services. This new "place" seems to be in a direction creating greater possibilities of a Burgeoning Community being built.
Projects that support the movement:
Baha'i Community and Cluster Development, devotionals, creating spaces for prevalent discourses in society.
